one more thing on names . . .

By jeffreypinkerton

With some of the friends that we made through the adoption process, there was also mentioned the idea of selecting a handfull of names and allowing the child (assuming they were old enough) to select their new name.

Never really convinced that was a great idea, once when I was visiting Haiti, I asked Wilton, “If you could change your name when you come home (although we love the name that your birth-mom and birth-dad gave you), what name would you choose?”

His answer . . .

“Umm . . . I think . . . Jackie Chan!?!”

Too funny! Our ‘newest’ son is 9 and from Haiti as well. I think if he were given a choice, he would pick the same name. Jackie Chan is who got us through our first few months together. When our son was overwhelmed in our crazy house (6 bio kids) we would pop in a Jackie Chan video, and all would be right in the world.

I am really enjoying your blog!

Hi Pinkertons. I oddly found you through an ask.com search about disrupting birth order. My family is in proces to adopt 2 children and we have 1 (bio) at home. All their birthdays are in July and they will be turning boy (in process) 4, boy (bio) 3, and girl (in process) 2. I know we’re crazy to have these ages, but someone pushed my “concerned about birth order” button today, making me feel crazier than ever. SOOOO, I don’t have time to read your entire blog, and was hoping you might email me some reassurance and maybe hints about helping the transition. We’re adopting both kids (they’re not siblings YET!) from Liberia, West Africa, where things are very “flexible” so we don’t have any better timeline than to expect them home between July and December. Thanks for any advice you might have. :)
